Something that should be clarified, is that contrary to the mistaken belief, is that “plastic” surgery does not involve the use of any kind of plastic – it is just a term. Plastic surgery is a blanket term encompassing many different kinds of surgical procedures that alter the physical appearance of a person for the sake of aesthetics. In recent surveys, over 70% of seniors said they would consider getting plastic surgery and in fact the number of seniors actually doing so has steadily increased.

Since it is surgery, many seniors worry if it is too risky for them due to their age. A large study examining the affect of age on plastic surgery patients in the U.S. determined that there was no substantial difference between the outcome of plastic surgeries for people over and under 65. Most medical opinion holds that the safety of plastic surgery for people over the age of 60 mostly depends on the patient’s individual health, not age. Patients of all ages that were in general good health, were non-smokers and at a healthy weight, were less likely to develop complications. The following is a list of the most popular plastic surgeries for seniors in 2022.

Neck Lift

Neck lift surgery can involve a set of procedures to enhance the appearance of your neck. While this can be done as part of a face lift procedure, it is often performed on a separate basis. The specific set of procedures you have depends on what results you’re looking for. Neck lift procedures can include:

– Removing excess skin (cervicoplasty)
– Removing or altering neck muscles (platysmaplasty)
– Liposuction to remove excess fat
– Botox injections to address problems with fullness or “bands”
– Kybella injections to remove excess fat under the chin

The most common things that people get neck lifts for are: “turkey wattle neck”, excess fat and too much skin. Recovery usually involves around one week rest and recuperation at home followed by many weeks for pain and visible signs to heal.

Eyelid Reshaping

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure that corrects eyelids that are sagging or drooping. Eyelids often show the first signs of aging, however eyelids that sag or droop can also affect your peripheral vision and interfere with daily activities. Thus, there are two types of blepharoplasty:

– Cosmetic blepharoplasty: A cosmetic blepharoplasty can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelid, or on both. Depending on the type of lower eyelid blepharoplasty, either excess skin in the lower eyelid is removed or a redistribution or removal of excess fat is performed.

– Functional blepharoplasty: A functional blepharoplasty removes the excess skin that obscures your field of vision. If the procedure is determined to be medically necessary, it may be covered by medical insurance, unlike most cosmetic surgery.

Blepharoplasty is typically performed in an outpatient setting and requires local anesthesia and sedation. The procedure takes anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on whether you are having the procedure on both the upper and lower eyelids. The stitches will usually be removed by the third or fourth day after surgery. It is usually possible to return to work within a week but not to engage in exercise and strenuous activities for at least two weeks.

Nose Job

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is the most popular and well known type of plastic surgery across all age groups. The purpose of this surgery is to reshape the nose, bringing it into balance with the rest of the face, to achieve a more overall attractive appearance. While most typically associated with females, both men and women have this procedure done.

The surgeon may reduce the overall size of the nose and/or refine and reshape areas of the nose for a more pleasing appearance. If medical reasons call for this procedure, as in the case of a deviated septum, insurance may pay for some or all of the surgery. Facial bruising will be obvious after surgery for the first ten days or so, after which most patients can return to work.

Facelift

Medically known as a rhytidectomy, a facelift procedure can involve a mixture of cosmetic surgery procedures. It is frequently combined with other procedures such as forehead lift, eyelid shaping or skin peels, to achieve a more youthful appearance of the patient. A facelift tightens the skin of the face to give a more youthful appearance by gently pulling skin tighter, smoothing deep lines, and minimizing sagging. Facelifts are usually an involved surgical procedure done in a hospital. Stitches are often removed five to 10 days after the procedure, but recovery will take several weeks.

Forehead Lift

Similar to a facelift, a forehead lift pulls the skin of the forehead tighter to remove wrinkles and smooth creases. A main benefit of this procedure is that the eyebrows are elevated resulting in a more alert and youthful appearance. Also, patients with deep furrows between the eyebrows benefit from a forehead lift as the lines are minimized as the eyebrows are raised. Most patients are able to resume normal activity within ten days of surgery.
